The importance of sports in human life is better understood with each passing day. With the introduction of computer and television into our lives, unfortunately, children, our most valuable assets, tend to adopt a still lifestyle away from sports. If we can infuse the importance and necessity of sports to our children, we will open the doors to a healthier future for them.

Sport contributes to the psychological and social development of the growing child as well as physical development. Individual sports contribute to the development of self-confidence, the ability to take responsibility for themselves, while sharing team sports, co-operation, and controlling the control of individual ambitions in front of the team while acting as a team. School success comes with a child who learns how to use his time correctly.

Regular physical activity increases strength and endurance of the child, bone development is positively affected, weight control is provided. The development of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other health problems that may develop in adulthood as a result of inactivity and excess weight can be prevented by sports.

Before starting the sport, it should be evaluated whether the child has a health problem that may prevent him / her from doing sports. The age, anatomical and functional structure and strength of the child are taken into consideration to determine which sports they are suitable for.

What type of exercise at what age?

Early childhood period, which includes children between the ages of 5 to 7 regular exercise rather than running, jumping, jumping, swimming, including all body movements, activities that run large muscle groups should be preferred. Games that promote creativity and research, dance and folklore activities with simple figures should be supported. In this age group, the child is more individual, so individual activities should be supported

In addition to the above activities in the middle childhood, ie around 8-9 years, activities such as cycling, team sports, learning about basic sports movements and dance and folklore activities with complex figures can be started. During this age group activities can be emphasized. Teamwork is important for leadership, personal discipline development. Every child should be given the chance to lead.

After the age of ten, the competition style should be focused on individual and team sports and group activities. Personal and team sports competition-style organizations can be started.

The appropriate ages for studies related to specific sports branches are; gymnastics, football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, tennis, skiing for 9-11 years, 12 years for wrestling, 14 years for cycling, 15-16 years for weightlifting, 17 years for boxing.

What are the duties of families?

1. Set an example for your child by doing sports,

2. Participate in family activity programs at school or outside,

3. Encourage, direct your child, but do not be oppressive,

4. Support your child with constructive criticism,

5. Setting goals beyond your child's physical abilities and capacity may lead to distancing from sports.

As children develop anatomically, physiologically and psychologically, exercise programs should be taken into consideration. Child safety is always of paramount importance. Children have a high risk of injury due to overuse injury, over-exercise or trauma-related growth plate. New activities should be started with low intensity to increase the tolerance and skill of the child and the intensity should be increased gradually. In children, the thermoregulatory system is not fully developed according to the body temperature adjustment system can be experienced in very hot and cold environments, while the body may experience difficulties in adaptation. Therefore, it is very important to get suitable clothes and adequate liquid intake.

The first models that our children see and take as examples while preparing for life are their parents. If we can adopt a healthy, sporting lifestyle and make it a family social activity, our children will pass on this habit to their adult lives and their own children.
