It is very important to perform a basic ophthalmologic examination of each newborn. In this way, many problems that may be seen in later childhood and even in adulthood can be treated at the beginning.

There may be many examination findings that can be detected in the newborn. The first is edema in the eyelids of the newborn. Subconjunctival hemorrhage (ie small bleeding foci in the white eye), which can be seen especially in normal born babies, will resolve spontaneously in about 10 days. Another important point is the conjunctivitis of the newborn (inflammatory disease of the white part). In this case, the eye is red, with discharge and lid edema. What should be done is the correct drug treatment against the pathogen causing infection after a differential diagnosis by an ophthalmologist. Delay in treatment may cause permanent eye damage.

Other important abnormal findings in the neonatal period are those related to the fundus. The fact that the bottom of the eye reflex, which should normally be red, is white requires urgent thorough examination of the baby's bottom of the eye. Retinobalstoma (a type of tumor in the eye) should be urgently excluded.
In the differential diagnosis of retinobalstoma, other causes of white leukocyte (leukocori) should be investigated. One of the most common causes of leukocoria is congenital (congenital) cataract. Vitreous (glassy body), retina, white eye findings may be detected due to diseases of other eye structures. If the TORC + 1 group infections are diagnosed, detailed examination of the eyes is inevitable.

It is the tissue deficiencies that may develop during the embryonal development process of the eye tissue called coloboma (the process in the womb). In this case, the development of one or more eye tissues remained incomplete. Detection of these colobomas during the examination will alert the baby that there may be other systemic problems and guide the systemic examination.

Here we have focused on the basic examination of the sound newborn. Eye examination of premature newborn is very important and should be discussed in detail under a separate title.
