Tear gas, as the name suggests, is an extreme irritation of the eye, transient paralysis of the eyelids and consequently excessive tear secretion. The burning sensation is very strong and not limited to the eyes. It also causes irritation in the nose, nasal passages, skin and respiratory tract.
In some long-term animal experiments, tear gas has been shown to have no adverse effects on pregnancy. Although it is very old, one of these studies did not cause any abnormality in the baby even if the chemical was injected into the abdominal membrane. Therefore, it is not known whether these chemical gases have any long-term effects.
In the Middle East, it is observed that the incidence of low exposure in pregnant women exposed to such gases is increasing, but it is not clear whether this increase is caused by gases or war conditions in the region.
