Health at Home in Winter…
Inadequate ventilation of the place where you live does not allow the fresh air outside or the dirty air inside to go out, causing increased domestic pollution. High humidity increases the concentration of some contamination agents. Causes of pollution in your home; fuel products (gas, oil, kerosene, coal, wood and tobacco products); The health effects of indoor air pollution can be seen immediately and sometimes occur after years. Immediate effects; eye, nose and throat irritation, headache, dizziness, fatigue. These are short-term and will improve if you remove the affected person from the dirty area. Long-term health problems are; asthma, hypersensitive pneumonia and moisture fever. Health problems such as breathing, heart disease and cancer may also occur. If someone is pregnant at home, the ventilation system should be very good, especially in winter.

Maintaining Fresh Air
First, identify any source of air pollution where you live. Have all flammable sources checked by authorized service centers and restrict smoking at home. Provide ventilation in the house by opening windows and doors. Make use of the ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathroom. Obtain air purifiers.

Houses that are left unventilated due to cold weather cause an increase in some pollution agents and stimulation of allergies. These agents are dust mites, pets and molds. To get rid of this allergy, the source must be dried. And the hygiene in the room we sleep in is very important. Ventilate your home properly to reduce sneezing and nasal congestion and periodically fresh air. Keep the furniture in your bedroom to a minimum and sweep frequently. Ear and sinus problems become more frequent during pregnancy. Sinus infections are three times more common in this period. Nasal discharge is seen in 20 percent of mothers in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters (quarterly period). Sinus infections are characterized by a greenish discharge and tenderness of the upper and lower bones of the eye. Penicillin-derived drugs or erythromycin (antibiotic variant) are used to treat sinus infections. These drugs are considered safe during pregnancy. Pregnant women with runny nose are more prone to throat and lung infection. Saline-based sprays (serum containing nasal sprays) are OK.

Nose bleeding
Nasal bleeding, which is common in dry winter months, may increase during pregnancy. Stop bleeding by applying gentle pressure to the bridge of the nose. Humidifiers, saline-based sprays, apply vaseline into the nose while lying, help in reducing nosebleeds.

Shortness of breath
Breathing is more frequent in the first period of pregnancy. Hormones increase your lung capacity and give your baby more oxygen. As the uterus grows later, it takes up more space in the abdomen and shortness of breath occurs. 31-34. per week, the uterus begins to push the diaphragm and makes it difficult for the lungs to expand. More superficial breathing is seen. In the last week of pregnancy, when the baby is placed in the pelvis, the pressure in the lung decreases and there is difficulty in breathing. In such cases; sit upright and stand upright, so your lung has more room to expand. Reduce the task of the heart and lungs by making slow movements. Always put a pillow under your head while you sleep. If shortness of breath is exacerbated or occurs suddenly, consult your doctor.

Asthma is one of the most important diseases that will cause problems during pregnancy. Many asthmatic expectant mothers can easily cure this disease due to the good regulation of treatment and the use of appropriate medication during pregnancy. Sometimes asthma is diagnosed when you are pregnant. Asthma affects mothers in different ways.
Symptoms 29-36. There may be exacerbation between weeks of pregnancy. Uncontrolled asthma reduces the oxygen intake of the expectant mother and therefore the fetus may be affected. To reduce asthma attacks during pregnancy, avoid triggers (such as cigarette smoke…), use therapeutic medication, exercise under control.

Influenza Influenza
Pregnancy increases the risk of serious medical complications of influenza. In the flu season, mothers who are more than 14 weeks old should be vaccinated. If you catch the flu, do bed rest and consume plenty of fluids. If you do not regain your health within a few days, and if your cough becomes aggravated, you have difficulty breathing, tell your doctor.


Passive smoking
Being indoors with the winter months increases the passive smoking of mothers. In pregnant babies with passive smoking, intrauterine growth retardation, low birth weight, learning and behavioral disorders and some childhood cancer risk increase.

Electromagnetic fields
Electric blankets, which are manufactured to protect against cold weather, are highly preferred in winter. However, some of the children of mothers who used electric blankets or warming devices during their pregnancy had leukemia. TV sets, water beds, hairdryers, electric clocks, ovens, electric cookers and sound systems with headphones are safe.
