The incidence of some allergies increases in summer
Allergy is one of the most common conditions in childhood. Although the incidence increases especially in the spring, some allergies are more common in the summer. Yeditepe University Hospital Head of Pediatric Allergy Prof.Dr.Reha Cengizlier Describes the most common allergy types in the summer.
• Solar Allergy:
This is a condition that should not be confused with sun sensitivity or sunburn. Depending on the color of the skin, each person develops a reaction to the sun in different duration and intensity. It is less severe in dark-skinned people and more severe in light-colored people. In sun allergy, skin color has no effect. Even a small amount, itching, flushing, swelling in the sun-exposed areas develop. Itchy reaction develops not only at the seaside in summer, but also in sun-exposed areas in other seasons and daily life. In addition to protection from the sun as much as possible, it can also be partially prevented with sun protection creams with a factor of 20-24 in daily life. Of course, these people should not even sunbathe for tanning.
• Allergy to insect and bee stings:
A person has an allergic structure; For example, allergic asthma does not mean that people will have allergies to bee and insect stings. Other people are at risk. Because of the allergic reaction to bee and other insect stings, it is a different matter. When the bee stings, each person has more or less reactions. That area swells, flushes, itches. But if you are allergic to bees; again in relation to the severity of allergy these reactions occur much more exaggerated. It may even cause systemic symptoms that affect the entire body, not just in the inserted area. The most extreme point of this is the so-called “anaphylaxis tab. It has a wide range of symptoms ranging from extensive flushing, itching, abdominal pain, diarrhea, palpitations, fainting or sudden death. It is not possible to know if there is a bee allergy in advance. Bee venom skin test or blood tests with a high rate of error. However, those who have experienced a systemic reaction due to bee stings before, to protect from recurrence, to save time to go to the hospital "Epi-pen" called, in the form of pen and bee sting itself should be carried with the drug can be applied urgently. It is a drug that can be obtained from abroad through the pharmacist room and needs to be renewed after the expiry date. However, even if they have this medicine, those who are allergic to bee stings should immediately go to a health facility when the bee stings. Immunotherapy (vaccine treatment) is applied by an allergy specialist for bee venom allergy.
Excessive swelling, flushing with mosquito bites may occur. Application of a cortisone cream at the earliest stage reduces the severity. In addition, as the child grows, the severity of this reaction decreases over time and returns to normal.
• Chlorine allergy:
People with a known allergic disease such as asthma, allergic rhinitis may exacerbate their complaints especially after entering the pool. This was due to chlorine in the pool. However, there is no allergies to chlorine here. Chlorine can trigger allergies and exacerbate complaints. There is no chance of knowing this from the beginning. We recommend allergy patients to do all kinds of sports activities. Swimming is also a particularly recommended sport. Furthermore, the chlorine-induced reaction occurs in a very small proportion of allergic patients. Therefore it is not right to prohibit. Some patients may even continue to use the medication they use for allergies, thus tolerating chlorine. It is useful to make all kinds of experiments before giving up swimming.
• Cold allergy:
Allergic reactions may occur in cold weather or by contact with cold water. Suddenly jumping into the cold sea can even lead to death. In winter, exposed areas such as face, hand, finger become red, swollen. You need to keep warm. Likewise, edema, swelling, obstruction may occur in the respiratory tract due to internal contact with the cold, such as drinking cold water or drinks, eating ice cream. Treatment is avoidance. Ice cream or other foods; Allergy to the food itself may also occur except that it is cold. In this case, it also causes allergies when the food is hot. For example, if you are allergic to milk; not only ice cream, yogurt, cheese can also touch. It is not correct to make a food restriction before the definitive diagnosis is made by an allergy specialist. Unconscious random restriction can lead to malnutrition.
