In the beginning, a sponge bath with a warm, damp washcloth is all your newborn needs. Before giving your baby her first tub bath, wait until her umbilical cord falls off, which usually happens ten to 14 days after birth.

When your baby is ready to go in the tub, it's fine to use just water. If you do use soap, choose a mild one made for babies so it doesn't irritate her skin.

Keep in mind that two or three baths a week may be enough (especially if your baby doesn't enjoy them). Babies don't sweat like adults or get dirty like toddlers, so regular baths are less of a necessity.

On the other hand, if your baby finds her bath soothing, you might want to include one as part of your bedtime routine.
