A honeysuckle before bedtime seems to have a calming effect on a child's cough and, moreover, it seems to help him have a restful sleep, reports Reuters Health.
This new study compares three ways to combat cough: use of honey as a treatment, drug treatment and no treatment.
Of the three, honey provided the best result, it works by covering and soothing the irritated neck.
In general, cough medications are only recommended for children over 6 years of age.
Pediatricians say they recommend honey as an alternative remedy, but I also caution that it cannot be given to children under 1 year of age because of the risk of botulism.
The study was conducted on a batch of 105 children with respiratory viruses. The children were randomly divided into three groups.
The first group was given a cough medicine containing a dose of honey, and dextromethorphan.
The second group was given only honey and the control group was given a placebo.
Parents were then asked about the symptoms of cough and sleep of children before and after treatment.
Following the statements provided by the parents, honey wanted the best result in combating cough in children.
