Tricks of a writer to teach children to write stories

A story is a short narrative, oral or written, in which a fictional story is told with a small number of characters, an underdeveloped intrigue, and a rapid climax and final denouement.

Personally, I will tell you that I have read a lot throughout my life and, I believe that this has been fundamental when deciding to take this path, that of a writer of children's stories and a poet. Do you want to know some of my tricks for writing children's stories?

- Writing is a creative process that I enjoy and amuse me. I always carry a notebook and a pen to take notes because at any moment inspiration can come, (I think that is something common in all creatives).

- I talk to the childrenI pay attention to their words, their gestures and their occurrences, and that helps me understand a little what is inside those little heads.

- When I write children's stories I give free rein to my fantasy, I visualize each scene, just as I do when I write children's poetry, I get into the story in such a way that I live it from the inside, I know what each character feels and thinks because I get into their skin.

- To write a children's story, I devise a story, a situation and some characters and possibly along the way the characters will appear or change and new ideas will be born, in such a way that I enter a fantasy loop in which the imagination has no limit.

- Children are not stupid, they are children, that's why I always try to write with a simple language adapted to each age but without underestimating their abilities, something that seems fundamental to me. I believe that if I am able to convey my enthusiasm for what I do, it will be easier for them to reach them, and that if I tell them about something I believe in, it will be easier for them to believe it.

- When my children were little I used to make up some stories for them and, I remember, for example, having Little Red Riding Hoods of all colors, change the beginnings and endings of traditional tales and, tell you many more stories, than now, I am sorry I did not write down because I am unable to remember them.

- Read and reread, cross out, throw away, write again, all this is part of this creative process. Finally, it is essential spell check and choose a good title that has to do with our history.

In a story anything goes and that amazes me. Reality will always be there but, even if there is a part of reality, our imagination can fly unchecked and that is something extraordinary and very fun. After all, the best thing about a story is that you can dream, imagine, fly, Is there anything more beautiful than the word fantasy?

To end today I leave you one of my phrases: "Fantasy is not a story, but the story is fantasy."

How to change the behavior of children with values

Envy, anger, pride ... each and every one of these feelings (which of course also occurs in children), represent a counter-value. Countervalues are just the opposite of the values that help us grow and interact in harmony with others.

Children, just as they learn to behave guided by certain values, they also learn not to be carried away by these countervalues.

We show you what are the main countervalues that your child will have to face from a very young age. Countervalues such as envy, disobedience, anger or impatience, are natural feelings that arise spontaneously in the first years of life and that you will have to teach them to control.

Don't panic when these feelings arise. The most normal thing is that the child does not know how to handle them. You can help him understand what is frustrated and you can explain how he can overcome it.

The rancor. We give you tips to teach your child to forgive and not be spiteful towards his friends. It is a fundamental value, that of forgiveness, which is learned since childhood.

The envy. Envy is a destructive feeling, nothing enriching, although it is normal for it to appear at some point in childhood. You can prevent your child from being envious of others. We explain how you can teach your child not to be envious with some simple guidelines.

Greed. Greed is a counter-value, an attitude that does not help to grow in a healthy way. Therefore, we must try to transform that feeling that children sometimes experience for another that brings them benefits. We teach you how to help your child not to be greedy.

The lie. All children have lied at some time. But there are children with more facility to lie. We explain why they do it and what you should do when you discover that your child is lying. We show you some resources that you can use to stop your children's lying habit. Teach them that the lie has short legs.

Impatience. Patience is a learned value, but very difficult to apply for children. Children are impatient by nature, but they can learn to control this impatience. We explain how.

Irresponsibility. Responsibility is one of the values that are learned. Irresponsibility certainly leads to failure in all aspects of life. That is why it is important that parents know how to educate their children to be responsible. We give you some tips.

The arrogance. Proud children do not accept criticism, they are arrogant and need constant flattery. But this pride is a sign that they have a lack and low self-esteem. We explain how to educate proud children. How to teach the value of modesty and humility to children.

Tyranny. There are children whose demanding behavior is exaggerated. So much so that they can become 'tyrant' children. What can parents do to change this attitude?

Prepotency. Arrogance is that impulse that makes the child feel superior to the rest. It often leads to violent behavior if they oppose him, since he will always try to impose his will and has a lot to do with bullying or bullying. We explain why this behavior is due and how you can avoid being arrogant in children.

Laziness. Some children refuse to do things out of sheer laziness. They avoid responsibilities and tasks at all costs. How can we help them not to become lazy children?

Children's tantrums

How can parents understand children's tantrums? The psychologist, psychopedagogue and child psychotherapist Isabelle Filliozat, offers in her book No more tantrums, presented as a comic, the explanations that parents need to better understand children's tantrums and gives us new guidelines to act in a concrete way, according to the age of the child, and overcome without difficulties that difficult period of child behavior between 1 and 5 years of age.

What are the most common behavior problems for children today?
The proliferation of screens, electronic objects and also the huge supply in supermarkets of toys, candies, cakes and drinks, places the child in a world that is difficult for him to manage. So they flare up more often than the old kids. Hyperactivity and attention deficit are the ills of today's society. For one thing, children have fewer opportunities to run and relax. On the other hand, adults instill in them from a very young age the culture of zapping and in addition, they consume more sugars, gluten, colorants and food additives than 20 years ago.

Can a tantrum or a crisis be considered normal in young children?
Yes and no. Some crises are inevitable, and others are avoidable. It is normal to cry when hungry, but let's not let the child be hungry, let's feed him! It is normal tantrum in a child that he still cannot speak when we do not understand his need, and he sees that we are trying to contradict him. It is natural, when a two-year-old child wants so much to be able to do things well and finds that he still cannot do it, for example, when the tower of cubes falls, when he cannot ride a bike, etc.

Then the attitude of the parents should be:
- Avoid situations of excessive simulation or agree to accompany the child in the psychic discharge.
- Teach the words to express feelings.
- Teach the child to negotiate with his brothers and sisters and his companions, teach him to set limits and to enforce them without violence.
- Avoid giving orders and propose options
- Give simple and positive instructions (for example “walk close to me” rather than “don't walk away”)

At what age do tantrums appear and why?
Tantrums appear near 18 months, when the child begins to want to decide for himself and the father does not take that need into account. The tantrums will lessen when the child is able to express himself in words.

What is the cause of children's tantrums?
A necessity, an overload of stimulants (too much noise, too many decisions to make, too many colors, shapes or too many people… a train, a station or a supermarket…), lack of information (they still don't know that it is not written on the walls), parental attitude which puts the child in an impossible situation of double annoyance (the father gives an order, 'put on your boots', the two-year-old does not want to put the boots on until he feels like it). There are also physiological causes: an allergic sensitivity (gluten, sugar, milk ... food intolerances can trigger attacks of anger, brutality, tears, negativity ...) or intoxication (mercury, aluminum ...).

Can you set a time limit for the duration of a tantrum?
Yes, a tantrum is a stress relief situation that lasts only a few minutes. If it is repressed by parents, it can last longer.

Are parents sometimes guilty of their children's irritating behaviors?
Parents are no more guilty than their children. It is not about guilt, but about understanding children's needs, their motivations to act as they do. Children need help and support from parents to mature.

How should parents react to their children's tantrums?
When the father identifies that it is a problem of stimulant overload in the brain, he can hold his son so that he cannot hurt himself, or hurt his father and invite him to scream and argue. So this period is very short, the child screams, his body is very tense, and then he relaxes, some tears fall that are not sadness but a manifestation that the calms the body. And it all ends with a hug. When the tantrum is linked to a frustration, the father may recognize that it is not pleasant to live that frustration without judging the child, the objective is to say words to the child so that he himself learns to express his feelings.

Eating a vegetarian diet during pregnancy

Is it safe to eat a vegetarian diet in pregnancy?

Yes. As long as you eat a variety of healthy vegetarian foods and plan your diet to include key nutrients, you can get all the nourishment you and your baby need, whether you're vegetarian or vegan. (Vegans do not eat any animal products including meat, fish, fowl, eggs, dairy, and honey.)

If you're vegan, see our article on whether it's safe to eat a vegan diet during pregnancy.

In some cases, you'll need to rely on fortified foods or supplements to make sure you're getting enough of what you need. Let your healthcare provider know about your diet at your preconception visit or your first prenatal visit. And always consult your doctor, midwife, or a dietitian before taking any supplements while you're pregnant.

Along with a variety of fruit and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned) and whole grain products, you'll want to make sure you eat foods or take supplements that provide the following nutrients important for a healthy pregnancy.

Eat several servings of protein-rich foods each day. Good sources of vegetarian protein include eggs, dairy products, legumes, soy foods, nuts, seeds, and nut butters.

Here are some ideas on how to work these foods into your diet:

  • Add beans (such as kidney, black, or white), chickpeas, lentils, or tofu cubes to a salad
  • Have a bean burrito
  • Snack on a handful of almonds, walnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, or roasted chickpeas
  • Spread peanut or almond butter on whole grain bread or sliced apples
  • Snack on yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Slice up a hard-boiled egg

Your prenatal vitamin will likely provide some iron. But you'll also need to eat several servings of a variety of iron-rich foods every day. Good sources include:

  • Iron-fortified breakfast cereal
  • Whole grain or enriched foods, such as bread and pasta
  • Beans and other legumes
  • Tofu, tempeh, and other soy-based foods
  • Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and chard

Avoid having tea or coffee with your meals because these drinks contain tannins and polyphenols, which make it harder for your body to absorb iron from vegetables. Instead, have something that's rich in vitamin C, such as orange juice, tomato sauce, or broccoli, to help your body absorb the iron.

You'll have a blood test early in your pregnancy to check your iron level. If yours is low, your healthcare provider may recommend that you take an iron supplement.

Try to get several servings of zinc-rich foods every day. Many foods that provide iron – such as fortified breakfast cereals, beans, soy foods, and whole grains – also provide zinc. Other good sources of zinc for vegetarians include nuts, seeds, wheat germ, and cheese.

Have several servings of a variety of calcium-rich foods every day. Good sources include:

  • Milk, cheese, and yogurt
  • Calcium-fortified almond or soy milk, fruit juice, and breakfast cereals
  • White beans, blackstrap molasses, tahini, and calcium-set tofu. (To see if the tofu is calcium-set, check the list of ingredients for a calcium salt, such as calcium chloride or calcium sulfate.)
  • Almonds or sesame seeds
  • Certain green vegetables, including kale, collards, turnip greens, napa cabbage, broccoli, and bok choy. (Others, such as spinach, beet greens, and chard, contain calcium, but your body doesn't absorb the calcium from these vegetables as well.)

Vitamin D

This vitamin helps your body absorb calcium. Cow's milk and some types of orange juice, cereal, and plant milk are fortified with vitamin D. Many prenatal supplements include vitamin D. If yours doesn't, you may want to consider taking a supplement.

Vitamin B12 plays an important role in your baby's brain development. Eating several servings of dairy foods every day should provide you with enough, but if you are a vegetarian who limits or avoids dairy, you'll need to eat foods fortified with vitamin B12. These may include soy and other plant milks, breakfast cereals, and nutritional yeast. (Check for fortification on the product label.)

If you don't eat dairy or fortified foods every day, and your prenatal supplement doesn't contain B12, you'll need to take a separate vitamin B12 supplement.

Iodine is also important for your baby's brain development. Iodized salt, dried seaweed, cow's milk, and yogurt are good vegetarian sources of iodine. If you don't get a lot of these, check to make sure your prenatal vitamin contains iodine.

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that promotes the development of your unborn baby's eyes and brain. It's found in fish, fish oil, and algae. Because it can be very difficult to obtain DHA from non-fish sources, you may want to take an omega-3 supplement derived from algae and suitable for vegetarians.

Brushing your teeth daily is one of the hygiene rules that we teach our children. We buy them a suitable brush, a suitable paste and we give them instructions to clean teeth, molars and tongue.

But are they doing it of their own accord? You may very well have to chase your kids every day reminding them to brush their teeth. And is that, it is a task that causes them a lot of laziness And this is one of the reasons why they don't usually do it correctly. To change this, Take note of these guidelines to see if your child brushes his teeth properly.

The image of our little ones with their brushes, perched on the bathroom stool to look good in the mirror is touching. It is less so, all the times we have to remind them to brush their teeth. However, have you ever wondered if the child is doing a good job? Do you remove plaque or food debris well every time you brush your teeth?

Let's take a look at what we can do to reveal the cleanliness of our children's teeth by answering these questions:

- Do you brush your teeth 3 times a day? It is the minimum, after breakfast, lunch and dinner. We must instill this routine in our children to prevent food debris and impurities from accumulating between teeth and molars. It is very likely that a poor dental cleaning degenerates into cavities and this will not do a bit of grace to our pockets.

- How long does it take to brush your teeth? If you spend 30 seconds, you are doing it wrong. Dentists advise cleaning for at least 2 minutes. You can buy them one of those little time clocks (many children's toothbrushes include them) so they are aware of the time they have invested to do a proper cleaning.

- Are you under 6 years old? If you clean your teeth alone it is very possible that you do not do it correctly. Until that age, children do not have enough manual dexterity to remove food debris effectively. It is recommended that you be the one who supervises the cleaning and even helps him in the most difficult areas, such as the inside of the teeth, to ensure that a good job has been done.

- Do you floss? It is recommended that at least once a day dental floss is used to reach the most difficult sites. If you cannot use the thread correctly, there are other tools that can make the task easier, such as the Y-shaped thread.

- Do you follow up? Do not trust, even if your child is already 10 years or older that he is doing well. From time to time, go to the bathroom with him to see what he does and how, remind him of the guidelines and, above all, praise him when he does well. That will cheer you up on the next brushing.

- Have you used a dental plaque developer? If none of the above works for you, try making it more apparent to the child that their brushing is poor. Buy a special pill that reveals dental plaque at the pharmacy. It is a pill that has to be sucked, it will stain the teeth and the areas where there is more bacteria. Seeing blue or pink teeth and tongue (depending on the color of the pill) will not be able to believe it. As you brush your teeth, the color will fade because ... they have removed the plaque!
