What is a febrile seizure?

It's a convulsion caused by fever in a child between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. If your child has one of these seizures, he may roll his eyes, drool, or vomit. His body may twitch or jerk and his limbs may get stiff. His skin may appear a little darker than usual, and he may lose consciousness.

The seizure may last only a few seconds or 15 (very long) minutes. (If it lasts longer than three minutes, call 911.) Afterward, your child might seem a bit sleepy, or he might seem just fine.

In most cases, febrile seizures are harmless, but that doesn't make them any less terrifying for you while your child is having one.

Febrile seizures tend to happen in children with fevers that are higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit, but they can happen at lower temperatures. They tend to occur during the first 24 hours of a fever, but not necessarily when a child's fever is peaking.

How common are febrile seizures?

Two to 4 percent of children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years will have a febrile seizure at some point. One-third of these children will have another one, and about half of those will have a third. Febrile seizures are most common between the ages of 12 and 18 months.

A child is more likely to have febrile seizures if either of his parents had them when they were young. Kids who have their first febrile seizure in their first year of life are the most likely to have another one. A child is also more likely to have a second seizure if his fever was low when he had his first one, or if the seizure occurred early on in his fever.

What should I do if my child has a febrile seizure?

Quickly place him on his side, away from hard objects. Gently turn his head to one side so he won't choke if he vomits. Loosen his clothing if it's constricting him. Make sure he doesn't have anything in his mouth, and don't put anything in his mouth while the seizure lasts.

Don't try to lower your child's fever during a seizure by giving him medication, putting him in cool water, or sponging him off.

Keep track of how long the seizure lasts. If it goes on for longer than three minutes, call 911. (Even if the seizure doesn't last very long, try to note the length of time so you can tell the doctor.) Also call 911 if your child has difficulty breathing, if he's choking, or if his skin turns blue.

Otherwise, wipe away any vomit and call the doctor after the seizure is over – no matter how short it was – if it's your child's first one. The doctor will probably want to examine him to make sure he doesn't have a serious infection or other problem that caused the fever. If your child is older than 6 months and has had seizures before, the doctor can give you guidance about when you should call if a seizure lasts less than three minutes.

The doctor may also recommend that you give your child a fever-reducer such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, or lukewarm sponge baths to bring down his fever. (Never give your child aspirin, which could cause Reyes syndrome, a rare but dangerous condition.)

If your child's just had a seizure of any length for the first time and you can't reach a doctor right away, call 911.

Can I prevent my child from having a febrile seizure?

Some parents try to prevent febrile seizures by promptly bringing down any fever. But seizures tend to occur suddenly, sometimes before you even realize that your child is ill.

If your child has a fever and he's had a febrile seizure before, it's understandable that you'll worry about it happening again. Talk with his doctor about your concern. She'll be able to tell you if and when it's wise to try to bring down your child's fever.

If your child frequently has febrile seizures, his doctor may recommend a medication for him to take whenever he has a fever to lower the risk of a seizure. Such drugs have side effects, however, and in most instances, since febrile seizures are generally harmless, it's unnecessary to take preventive measures.

Are febrile seizures ever a sign that something is seriously wrong?

Usually a fever that causes a febrile seizure is the result of a viral upper respiratory infection (such as a cold or flu), stomach flu, roseola, or an ear infection. But in rare cases, the fever is a symptom of meningitis or another serious problem. Your child's doctor will consider his symptoms and screen him further if necessary.

Although you have the impression that you know your child better than anyone else, the little one does not cease to surprise you. Children cannot be "read" as easily as adults think! There are things you really can't understand. Here are some of those things that just shock you, making you understand that children still remain a mystery even to the one who wore them in their tummy for 9 months.

1. Why do they leave their fingerprints all over the walls, mirrors and other pieces of furniture?

Wait and ask yourself, are your baby's hands so dirty that they will suffer so much from your fresh paint? And in the end, is it really that hard to refrain from walking with your hands everywhere?

2. Suddenly, he does not like something that yesterday he eats with pleasure ...

How is it that when you discover one of the few foods that are to your liking at any time of the day and night, it becomes saturated immediately after you buy a lot of such products? It is only when you decide to invest in those foods and spend a lot of money, that your little one suddenly becomes rude!

3. Why do you want to eat something, first of all, through the nose, but when you start eating the same food, he wants to eat it too?

Then it seems that they do not seem so much to taste, although initially refused it categorically ...

4. Why is it only in the weekend that you wake up in the morning?

Why do you have to pray for him every day to wake up for school, but when the weekend comes he is awake from the early days of the day? And not only is he awake, but he is also very ... fit!

5. "Not allowed" sometimes means "you are free to do what you want" ...

Why do you sometimes say when you say "you are not allowed to do that thing" he understands and stops, and other times when you tell him the same thing he seems to understand the other way around?

6. The diaper just changed fills up immediately

How is it that your baby fills the diaper immediately after changing it, even though the previous one was almost dry? Sometimes you feel like you're doing it right, don't you?

7.Reality disappears as if out of the blue!

How is it that the home is sick and shows quite a lot of serious symptoms, and when you reach the pediatrician, they disappear as if suddenly? Sometimes you are also ashamed of the doctor because you saw him at home as he was suffering from pain and other symptoms.

8. How do you pee on bed only when you change your bedding?

As if to say that the smell of the balm causes him to "mark" those sheets!

9. The love you need, at the right time

How do you know exactly when you need a sincere and generous hug from him?

10. How does he care so much for his brother or sister without knowing what it really means to be a parent?

And even you are asked to make peace as a baby sleeps, as a baby cries, kisses, caresses ... it is impressive and at the same time this concern, almost parental to love a child, being himself a child.

Of course you know the answer to many of these "puzzles" and you quickly find a logical explanation for them. Only you were a child and you knew exactly why you sometimes did so, and others seem logical to you because you were informed about their causes.

However, we are sure that at one point the famous phrase "I do not understand why you do so, I really do not understand you" came to your mind, right? Maybe now you have fun or you think the powers of these little mysteries of children. For many mothers, most of the actions of young children remain mysteries. But what would mom life be like without these little Nazis and surprises from the children?
