Basic burns prevention

Supervision is the only reliable way to prevent accidents with things that burn.

Always supervise children in the kitchen, around hot surfaces like stoves, ovens, microwaves, heaters, irons and other appliances, and around outside hazards like barbecues, camp fires and exhaust pipes.

Seek immediate medical help from a doctor, hospital or medical centre if a child's burn is the size of a 20-cent piece or larger, if the burned skin looks raw, angry or blistered, or if the pain persists or is severe. Preventing burns indoors

You can prevent burns indoors by being aware of common risks and avoiding them.


  • Avoid leaving the kitchen unattended if you're using pots and pans, toasters, sandwich presses, slow cookers and rice cookers.
  • Keep children's play areas away from your kitchen.
  • Use the back burners on the stove first. Turn handles on pots and pans towards the back of the stove.
  • Install a guard around the hot plates on your stove.
  • Ensure kettle cords don't hang down within reach of your child. Use appliances with short cords.

Living and family areas

  • Securely attach guards around heaters to discourage children from standing too close.
  • Securely attach a fixed fire guard around any open fires, smouldering ashes, or electric or gas heaters.
  • Save ironing for after your children are asleep. You could also put your children - or yourself! - in a playpen while you iron.
  • Install cool-to-touch ovens and heaters.
  • Keep clothes and toys at least 1 m away from heaters.
  • Use placemats rather than tablecloths. If children tug on a tablecloth, it can bring hot food and drinks down on top of them.


  • Buy children close-fitting nightwear and dressing gowns with 'low fire danger' labels.
  • Try to keep bedside lamps and light bulbs out of reach, or unplugged, until your child is old enough to understand that they burn.
  • Don't use electric blankets on children's beds. Your child might be at risk of electrocution if he wets the bed. Babies and small children can also overheat or electric blankets can catch on fire if they're set too high or if grown-ups forget to turn them off.
  • If you use heaters in your children's bedrooms, turn the heaters off once children are in bed. Once children are old enough to get out of bed by themselves, take heaters out of bedrooms. If it's a cold night, you can dress your child in more layers or use more blankets to keep your child warm.


  • Always supervise children carefully around any naked flames, like open fires, gas burners, incense burners and candles.
  • Lock matches and cigarette lighters up high and out of reach, and always smoke out of the house and away from children. This also reduces your child's exposure to harmful second-hand smoke.

Fires can start as a result of cooking accidents, smouldering cigarettes, electrical faults, candles, incense and children playing with lighters and matches. Find out what you can do to prevent house fires. You can also develop and practise a plan regularly, in case there's a fire in your home.

You can prevent burns outdoors by being aware of common risks and avoiding them.

Outdoor cooking and heating

  • Brace or support gas heaters on patios so they can't topple over.
  • Don't use accelerants like petrol and kerosene to light fires.
  • Keep a close watch on children while your barbecue is heating up, being used or cooling down. Some barbecues can keep their heat for hours.
  • Only use water to put out barbecue and camp fires, and rake ashes so they lose their heat more quickly. Embers, coals and ashes can stay hot for up to eight hours after the fire has been buried under dirt or sand.
  • Supervise children around camp fires, and don't let children walk around camp sites barefoot.

Other outdoor burn hazards

  • Keep children away from exhaust pipes on cars and motor bikes. Exhaust pipes are easy to reach and can cause serious burns.
  • Check whether seatbelt buckles have heated up when the weather is hot.
  • Lock away tools like blow torches and soldering irons.
  • Keep lawnmowers away from children during and after use. Lawnmowers keep their heat for several minutes after you've used them.
  • In hot weather, check metal playground equipment, especially slides. They can get hot enough to burn a child.

Children born from fertility treatments are shorter

Children born to fertility drug treatments are shorter than those born naturally. This is the latest conclusion reached recently by several researchers from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Find out what influences children's height and why!


Fertility medicines, the treatment that makes the difference in height between children

According to an older theory, children born from in vitro fertilization, a highly popular assisted human reproduction technique, would tend to be taller than those naturally born. Not the same can be said about babies born after fertility drug treatments, whose stature seems to be slightly smaller than those naturally born.

The study was conducted at the Liggins Institute of the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and its conclusions were based on the careful monitoring of two groups of children: one with 84 children, designed based on fertility treatments with drugs, and the second consisting of 258 naturally designed children.

All children ranged in age from 3 to 10 years and came from single pregnancies, completed by term. To make the study and conclusions even more accurate, the researchers carefully selected the children, excluding those who were born with a very low or premature birth.

Even though they did not discover great differences, the specialists claim that the little ones that were conceived with the help of the fertility drug treatments were almost 2.5 cm lower in height than those that were conceived naturally. Even so, the researchers found that their height was within normal limits for their average age.

It was found that the height difference was more pronounced for boys. There were more boys in the group of children conceived with the help of fertility drugs with a height difference of almost 2.5 cm compared to those born naturally, than girls, which led the specialists to say that the male sex would be more affected in this regard. .

In terms of physical health, the Auckland team of researchers did not notice differences between the groups of children studied, a sign that the conception mode does not affect the growth and development of children.

Researchers have not been able to discover the causal relationship between fertility drugs and lower height, but there is a hypothesis that starts with some events that could have occurred at conception. It is possible that the smaller stature of these children will be born as a result of "printing" some abnormal variations or changes in the expression of the genes at the time of conception, but there is no evidence in this regard.

The researchers said that this difference does not pose any danger to the health of the little ones. Even so, a little shorter, children still fall into normal height parameters for their age and sex.

What to expect at this age

A preschooler isn't developmentally ready to focus on the greater good or to understand his role in the family, let alone his role in society (he does know, however, that he's the center of the universe!). He's also not ready for complex chores or for maintaining his own schedule. But he does want to be as busy and important as you appear to be. So take a positive view of it if your little one's always underfoot while you're trying to get things done. His desire lays the groundwork for the behaviors that will make him a responsible teen and adult.

What you can do

Choose age-appropriate tasks. Tasks that are too difficult will only overwhelm your preschooler. He'll be daunted by the request to "clean your room" – after all, it's probably even daunting for you. "Put your shoes in the closet," on the other hand, is manageable. You'll be amazed by how much pride and self-reliance he gains from undertaking such simple chores.

Show and tell. The best (and perhaps hardest) way to instill a sense of responsibility is to be a good role model with your own possessions – put your car keys where they belong instead of on the dining room table, and tidy up your stack of magazines instead of leaving them all over the couch. Then, when you give your child his own small tasks, show him exactly how to do them (day after day, at least for awhile). Saying, "Time to set the table," makes less sense to him than a demonstration accompanied by, "Look how I'm putting one plate on the table in front of each chair, and the napkins go just like this. Want to help me do that?" If you find yourself spending too much time demonstrating to your preschooler how to perform a task, chances are it's too complicated for him.

Teach first things first. Your preschooler isn't too young to learn that work comes before play. He'll get the message when you say, "Sure I want to take you to the park! But first we need to clean up after lunch." Be friendly and matter-of-fact about it, and admit that you prefer the fun, too – then he'll understand that you're not just being bossy, but are simply expecting him to behave responsibly.

Make the job a game. Remember learning about barn-raising parties, where the whole village would help a family build a barn, and then everyone would share a feast? We all enjoy tasks more when they're fun, social occasions. Your preschooler is happy to be spending time with you, and he doesn't view emptying the dryer as a chore – it's fun to pull out warm, fluffy clothes and pile them in a basket. Follow his lead and dance to music while you dust together, or have a race to see who can put away the most blocks.

Establish a routine. Your preschooler will learn responsible habits more easily if you set a routine early on. Teach him to put his dirty clothes in the hamper and help put his tub toys away after every bath. He'll see that chores are a part of everyday life, not something grownups hand out on a whim.

Phrase things in a positive way. Jerry Wyckoff, a family psychologist and the coauthor of Twenty Teachable Virtues, suggests using what he calls "Grandma's rule" to engender responsibility in preschoolers. "Grandma's rule makes it clear that your household has rules that everyone follows," says Wyckoff. So instead of issuing an ultimatum ("If you don't, then you won't"), Grandma's rule says, "When you've done what you have to do, then you get to do what you want to do." If your child says, "I want to play in the backyard," respond with, "When you put your puzzles away, then you can go outside to play." Saying, "If you clean up your toys, I'll give you a treat," on the other hand, really just bribes your preschooler for what should be normal behavior – and it raises the possibility that he'll decide he can live without the treat and thus pass on cleaning up his toys.

Give your preschooler space. For the sake of expediency, you may be tempted to grab his plate and put it in the dishwasher yourself. Try to resist this urge. Instead, concentrate more on your preschooler's efforts than his actual accomplishments. He may not be doing a perfect job, but criticizing him or co-opting his chores will only squelch his desire to help. (And remind yourself that practice does make perfect.) Try phrasing your suggestions in an encouraging way: "You've done a really good job clearing your plate. I like to put my dirty dishes in the dishwasher, though, not back on the shelf."

Expect ups and downs. "Kids are going to mess up. That's part of being a kid," says Paul Coleman, a father, psychologist, and the author of How to Say It to Your Kids. "But you can usually get more compliance when they realize there's a pattern." So try not to express anger or disappointment if your child is having an off day. Just say to him calmly, "Remember, you always put your trucks away when you're done playing with them."

Pour on the praise. Positive reinforcement will teach your preschooler that his efforts are important and appreciated. Be specific with your praise: "You did so well putting Fluffy's food right in his bowl," as opposed to "Good job!" When appropriate, point out exactly how his efforts have helped everyone else: "Now that you've put the spoons on the table, we can all eat right away. Let's sit down!"
