I-size car seats

I-size car seats In a moment we will start winter traveling for holidays or ski holidays. We've probably already taken care of winter tires, we did an additional car review and bought products that protect and facilitate traveling with children.

However, not everyone knows that five months ago, new regulations came into force for the safe transport of children in car seats. For the time being, they will not cause great confusion in our lives, because for the next few years they will apply with current standards, but if, for example, we're trying to buy a new car seat or change the car, it's worth knowing now what they are about and what we should pay special attention to.

Talking about i-Size regulation regarding the safety of transporting children in car seats, which the European Commission adopted and implemented on July 9, 2013. By eliminating the imperfections of the current ECE R44 / 04 standard, the new guidelines focus primarily on improving the safety of car seats during high frontal and lateral forces, paying special attention to protecting the child's head and neck area.

Work on regulation began in 2008 as part of the Working Group on Passive Road Safety, set up at the European Economic Commission UNECE (GRPS) and was divided into three thematic phases:

  • I) car seats with internal straps (harness) and ISOFIX system - stage completed in 2011;
  • II) car seats of the 15-36 kg category (high-back seats and seats) - work in progress, completion planned for 2014;
  • III) car seats with internal straps (harness) without the ISOFIX system - commencement of works after the completion of stage II, scheduled for completion in 2017.

As a result of activities related to the first stage of work, a regulation was drawn up on devices for transporting children in cars, which was then adopted during the GRPS congress in Geneva in November 2012. The regulation is called i-Size, paying attention to:

  • "I" - an intelligent (modern and thought-out) concept of change;
  • "Size" - the main attribute of the classification it has become child's height.

The consequence of GPRS activities was the approval by the European Commission, in early July 2013, of i-Size regulation as a new approval standard for car seats and safer standards for carrying children in them.

Over the next few years, the i-Size regulations will apply equally to the previous ECE R44 / 04 standard. This means that, most likely, by 2018 manufacturers will be able to produce car seats according to i-Size or ECE R44 / 04 standards, leaving the choice to buyers.

Main i-Size assumptions

1. Obligation to travel rearward-facing up to the age of 15 months
The current standards allow the possibility of transporting children in group 1 car seats from 9 kilograms, often confused with 9 months of age. The new i-Size regulations clearly regulate the need for rearward-facing child restraints for all children up to the age of 15 months and / or 75/80 cm tall.
2. Classification based on height, or child's age
For almost 30 years there has been a division of car seats based on the weight of the child, as a result of which small but heavy children are transplanted too early in the forward direction, while taller and slimmer ones travel longer in too small car seats.
3. Improved safety during frontal and side impacts
An analysis of the European-wide accident database shows that the main causes of child death in accidents are frontal collisions (34%) and side collisions (28%). Therefore, in addition to the applicable frontal impact tests, the i-Size standard requires seat manufacturers to guarantee specific safety criteria during side impacts.
4. Promotion of the Isofix system
Research conducted in EU countries has shown that a large percentage of car seats are installed incorrectly or incorrectly. The i-Size adjustment requires the child seats to have an Isofix system, a Top-Tether top tether and a support leg.

The i-Size regulation also assumes the adaptation of cars to new standards, which means that every car with i-Size approval must be equipped with two Isofix classes "b1" or "d" and a Top-Tether type hitch. Thanks to this, every i-Size car seat can be safely mounted on all types of cars with the i-Size system.

Bighead babies are smarter

Until now, calling a child 'big-headed' was a deliberate mockery. However, from now on being a stubborn child will fill them with pride. The reason ?: Having a big head it could be a sign of intelligence.

The bigger a baby's head is, the smarter it is. It seems controversial, and many will doubt it, but it is a fact verified by some scientists of the University of Edinburgh.

To reach this conclusion, the scientists took into account several factors: Your baby's genes, IQ, and health, and analyzed the relationship between all of them. It was found that the cognitive abilities of the child responded to a great genetic influence, and that they were also related to head size.

Genetics influence both body shape and brain size. The studio director, Ian Deary, ensures that the bigger the head, the more intelligent. To reach this conclusion, more than 100,000 British adults, aged between 37 and 73, were analyzed. They underwent a complete analysis to check their health status, their genetic component was studied and they were asked about their lifestyle. The data of all these people saved from when they were babies, related to the cranial perimeter, was analyzed. The conclusions they reached are these:

- Babies born with larger heads they are more likely to earn a college degree.

- Babies born with larger heads have a higher score in verbal and numerical reasoning.

- Babies who were also in very good health, showed higher IQ indexes.

The question is ... what is meant by stubborn baby? The normal perimeter of head circumference is 36 cm in boys and 35 cm in girls.. Whoever exceeds that average, congratulations ... if you know how to use your brain well, you will become more intelligent than the rest.

What to keep in the medicine chest

What to keep in the medicine chest

With a child around, it's important to have a well-stocked medicine cabinet or medicine bag (which can be stored out of reach and is portable) so you can quickly deal with the rashes, fevers, and other common ailments that children are prone to, as well as handle the ins and outs of daily care. Here are our must-haves:

  • Digital thermometer
  • Children's non-aspirin liquid pain reliever (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
  • Topical calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream (1/2 percent) for insect bites and rashes
  • Rubbing alcohol to clean thermometers, tweezers, and scissors
  • Petroleum jelly to lubricate rectal thermometer
  • Antibacterial ointment for cuts and scrapes
  • Tweezers for taking out splinters and ticks
  • A pair of sharp scissors

  • Nasal aspirator bulb syringe for drawing mucus out of a stuffy nose (not the pointy-ended ear syringe)
  • An assortment of adhesive bandage strips in various sizes and shapes.
  • Gauze rolls (1/2 to 2 inches wide)
  • Gauze pads (2x2 and 4x4 inches)
  • Adhesive tape
  • Sterilized cotton balls
  • Cotton-tipped swabs
  • Mild liquid soap (antibacterial and deodorant soaps may be too strong for children's sensitive skin)

When giving a gift to teachers has become an obligation

The end of the course arrives and the debate reopens: should we give the teachers a gift? It is a very controversial issue and in which everyone has an opinion, that is why I want to express mine today, above all, because I am against this new trend, although I participate in it, and that is for me giving a gift to teachers has become an obligation.

Every year I repeat the same phrase: 'Next year I will not sign up for the gift from my daughters' teacher', but in the end I will do it again, because I do not want the next time I go to look for them after school The creators and promoters of the WhatsApp group 'Gift teachers' point a finger at me or criticize me for the low, and, also, because the last thing I hope and wish is for someone to label my little ones for 5 or 10 euros.

For me, this fashion of giving gifts to teachers is another example of consumerism in society and, also, of looking good in the gallery. By this I do not mean that we should not be grateful and recognize that the work that teachers do is extremely important for the development and education of our children, but I sincerely believe that it is getting out of hand.

Luckily, in my eldest daughter's class, giving gifts was 'cut' when they entered primary school, something that I don't really understand either because, even though I am against it, what happens, that these types of teachers no longer deserve a detail ? Incoherent!

On the other hand, I have found out that in the other second grade class, a group of mothers has decided in a 'petit committee' to make a gift to the teacher, with which we will reach the end of the year and we will meet with that some teachers have gifts and others do not, embarrassing to the maximum!

In the case of the little girl, in the first year of childhood, the house has been thrown out the window. There are 25 children in class and they have put 10 euros to make a 'gift' to two teachers: the tutor and the English teacher. In total we have a whopping 250 euros to spend !!! Mothers have decided to make a Converse-type sneakers with the names of all the children (quite a detail, but I doubt if they will wear it to go down the street) and ... pay attention! an experience in a hotel for two people. Is it exaggerated or not?

I do my job and nobody pays me for it, and nothing happens. I keep coming with my best smile to look for the latest pregnancy news or new educational techniques to help other parents who, like me, care about their children and try to educate them in values.

Sometimes I receive negative comments because the article has not liked a reader and I take good note of it, and other congratulations because I have been able to help a mother or father in a time of crisis, but nobody sends me gifts and not for that I'm going to stop putting myself in front of the computer. Why do you have to do it with the profession of teachers? Why not do it with doctors or pediatricians, who also play a very important role in the lives of our children and in ours? Why is a 'Thank you' not enough?

I am left with the phrase that my colleague Marga Santamaría, educational coach and pedagogue on this subject, wrote a few days ago, and that helps me not to see everything so negative and, above all, to think that we are the parents who are to blame for this whole show : 'We teachers do not measure the gift, nor do we assess whether there is one or not, we already have our gift every day with our students'.

They run, they run the wrong ideas about the risks of work for future moms ... the real ones too. Especially those concerning the risks of prematurity. We take stock with this quiz.

Question (1/9)

Occupational activity is a risk factor in prematurity

Right wrong

Reply

Overall, expectant mothers are not at risk of being employed. However, the influence of work varies greatly depending on the nature and conditions of employment. Some pregnant women work in conditions "prejudicial" to their pregnancy. It is for these women that it is important to plan a workstation.
