How to learn to learn

On many occasions, children are very willing to study, yet in practice they spend a long time in order to memorize a lesson or understand a concept. They spend their time without reaping the fruits of their effort and, therefore, end up being demotivated and postponing the moment to start studying.

Unfortunately, many times the failure or ineffectiveness in the study is caused by a lack of strategies to do it and not to low intelligence or attention problems.

In the first years of Primary, our children are challenged to start studying. It is no longer valid to attend class and attend; it takes memorize, understand, synthesize, relate and explain. Learning to learn now will make life easier ... for the rest of your life.

what can we do as parents? As always, complement what our children learn at school; approach their minds and show them realities that they will learn with enthusiasm because they are tremendously useful and because we are not going to evaluate them on them.

Too many children spend hours and hours 'studying', without obtaining good results, in a spiral of effort - bad results - demotivation, which marks them at school and, in the long run, many times professionally. Is it so difficult to learn to learn? I believe that learning to learn is like learning to sell, learning to plan or learning to decide. These are absolutely vital things, taken for granted, and to which neither we nor our educators have explicitly given the time it deserves.

Learning to learn has no recipes, or recipes. It has methods, which have to be acquired, assimilated and used. I am going to cite some of those that are key for me to learn:

- Distinguish concepts: differentiate similar objects or words, find the differences.

- Make definitions: We can start by saying what things are 'not', to narrow down the possibilities or play at giving clues to hit an object or animal.

- Associate ideas: use mnemonic rules that allow us to remember a name or thing in relation to other more everyday ones.

- To focus: not to lose the common thread or the central idea that we are going to study.

- Schematize: make diagrams or trees in which some concepts depend on others.

- Synthesize: make summaries or be able to answer a few central questions.

- To meditate: Reflecting on what we have learned There is no subject in school that deals with these activities of our mind, and yet we need to do them throughout our lives, it is important that from the beginning we put our children on the track of how to do it.
