New study aims to find out exactly what screen time is doing to kids' brains
The study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), involved scanning the brains of more than 4,500 preteens ages 9 and 10, and documenting, through questionnaires, the amount of time typically spent on screens. The research is part of a broader study that will follow children through adolescence to see what impact screen time and other influences such as concussions, drugs, and alcohol have on their health long-term.
In the first round of results, researchers found that children who used smart phones, tablets and video games more than seven hours a day showed a premature thinning of the outermost layer of their brain, called the cortex. That's the part of the brain that processes information from the senses. Findings also showed that kids who spent more than two hours a day on screens scored lower on language and thinking tests compared to kids who spent less time with screens, CBS reported.
These results are a cause for concern. And scientists plan to keep studying the impact of screens on kids' brains over a ten-year period. But right now, there isn't enough information to come to a solid conclusion about the effects of screen time. Researchers don't yet know whether the premature cortex thinning, which relates to maturation, is necessarily bad. They also don't know if these brain changes are long term. And they can't prove that screens are directly impacting children's brains and test scores, only that there's a correlation between the two.
That said, other studies have pointed to possible problems associated with screen time. These include shorter attention spans, hyperactivity, ADHD, obesity, sleep problems, and aggressive behavior.
In the meantime, it's important that parents manage their children's screen time so it doesn't interfere with, or take the place of, the many other social and interactive activities that should be a regular part of a healthy child's day—including exercise and sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends limiting screen time, especially for the youngest children. Here are the AAP's main guidelines:
- Kids under 18 months: Avoid screens other than video chatting.
- Children 18 to 24 months: If you decide to introduce digital media, choose high-quality programming, and watch it with your children to help them understand what they're seeing.
- Ages 2 to 5 years: Limit screen use to one hour per day of high-quality programs, and view with them.
- Ages 6 and older: Place consistent limits on screen time, and make sure it doesn't take the place of adequate sleep, exercise and other activities important for your child's health. Designate media-free times together, such as during mealtimes and in the car, as well as screen-free zones such as the bedroom.
