Step by Step method it is without doubt the most widespread educational alternative in Romania. It was promoted in our country by the Soros Foundation, being subsequently taken over by the non-governmental organization Step by Step Center for Education and Professional Development (CEDP). The first Step by Step classes for primary school children were established in 1994.
The performances recorded by the children determined the implementation of the method at the gymnasium as well, starting with the 1999-2000 school year. It is currently applied in many kindergartens and public schools, the only private institutions using it being the Bambi Kindergarten and the Step by Step Gymnasium in Bucharest.
What is the Step by Step method?
The alternative method of education Step by Step was born in the United States, following the efforts of several esteemed educators - Jean Piaget, Eric Erikson and LS Vagotsk. They understood that the big changes in society put their mark on the children, imposing the rethinking of the entire educational process. Thus, a system was created, based on the principle of horizontal education, where students and teachers are friends, teachers having the role of guiding children.
Children are personalities in training and need to be given the opportunity to make discoveries, to explore and to put into practice different exercises. As part of the Step by Step program, they become aware from the first year of school that all the events and changes that take place in the world are closely related to each other. Children are encouraged to participate actively in society and to appreciate the values of the democratic way of life.
Step by Step method it is centered on the student, seen as a unique being, worthy of trust and respect and takes into account his specific needs, his wishes and interests. The personality of the child is the basis for the elaboration of the educational behavior of the teacher. It has the task of creating an environment favorable to the formation of the students according to their aptitudes, desires and interests.
The Step-by-Step alternative can be integrated into the education of children from birth, up to the age of 16, to ensure their "step by step" development, according to the data of scientific psychology. In public schools in Romania, this educational alternative was implemented following a partnership between CEDP and the Ministry of National Education. It is the state that provides the necessary space for the hours, as well as the salaries of the teachers, and the CEDP organizes the training courses, also providing technical assistance.
Preschoolers and students learn from the same school syllabus, as do children from traditional groups and classes. The difference is in the methods of teaching and evaluation, derived from the principles of Step by Step. Teaching methods are child-centered and encourage family and community involvement in the educational process.
Children are encouraged to make their own choices and to express their ideas in a creative way. At the same time, the idea of help, critical thinking and the ability to think freely, without prejudice or fear, develop. Students in Step by Step classes are able to identify the problem they are facing at one point and solve it without the help of adults. They become able to communicate easily, to understand the ideas that are transmitted to them and to negotiate.
Principles of the Step by Step method
The Step by Step class is focused on the needs of the child, who has the opportunity to create their own knowledge through the experiences and interactions with the world around them. Teachers favor child growth and development by directing its interests, needs and qualities.
Each child is unique, so it will be different from the others. Different children develop at different rates and go through the critical periods specific to their individuality. Therefore, you should not compare the performance of the child with others, but compare with his previous results.
In short, the purpose of individualized education is the child's progress.
In the Step by Step classes, the child is positively motivated and is taught to cooperate with the other children. In this way, he matures emotionally and expands his knowledge. Positive motivation is achieved through activity map, evaluation booklet and awarding of distinctions for great results in a field. Thus, the system of scoring and awarding prizes existing in traditional classes is given up.
Granting grades would place children in a permanent competition and put too much pressure on them. Of course, this does not mean that the competitive spirit is negative. Competitions have their purpose, and can help people to have more confidence in them and to get confirmation of their own value. In the case of preschool or primary school children, it has been proven that the competitive environment does not generate the best results. Children in the lower classes learn much better if they are encouraged to cooperate and if they are congratulated on the results obtained from one day to the next.
Each student has his own map of activities, in which he collects different works, dated and commented by the teacher. This map reflects his / her progress in school and helps the child to achieve in which areas he / she is doing the best. The teacher will note, in turn, the progress made by the student in the individual assessment booklet.
Learning by activity centers
Within the Step by Step system, learning is done individually, by activity centers. These are well-delimited spaces in the classroom, equipped with teaching materials and other educational resources specific to the subject studied.
Each Step by Step class must contain:
- a Reading Center;
- a writing center;
- a Math Center;
- a Science Center;
- an Art Center;
- a Construction Center.
The children are divided into groups and receive tasks that they have to solve individually or in the team. This eliminates the confrontation between the student and the teacher. They now stand shoulder to shoulder and collaborate, starting from equal positions.
The author's chair
When a child wants to present his ideas or present his project, he takes the place in front of his colleagues and teachers on the "author's chair". The chair thus places the child in the center of the auditor's attention and makes him become aware of his responsibility. At the same time, he teaches others to pay due attention and respect when they speak.
Step by Step classes are equipped with modular furniture and are carpeted, to allow children to participate in certain activities sitting as comfortably on the floor, a position very loved by them. - to actively involve the students in the school life;
- to stimulate children to think independently, thus building and defining their own personality.
Although the program seems tolerant at first glance, Step by Step classes work according to well-established rules:
- The schedule is designed so as to provide each child with time for activity and rest.
- The furniture, the teaching materials and the arrangement of the class must be directly in line with the stage of development in which the children are.
- The presentation of the activities should be done in such a way as to stimulate the students and to help them achieve success.
- In the learning process, the emphasis must be on play and individualization.
- Individualization helps children to form a better opinion about themselves, thus becoming better and more courageous when it comes to new experiences.
Step by Step Method VS Traditional Method
Currently, the Step by Step alternative is present in nearly 30 countries worldwide. In Romania, hundreds of thousands of children have already benefited from this type of education focused on the needs of the students.
The traditional class with fixed, rigid benches, fixed schedule, notes, textbooks and homework have been replaced with a space arranged according to the students' training needs, as well as with stimulating teaching and assessment methods.
In each Step by Step class you will meet the following specific elements:
- a special panel for birthdays and celebrations;
- a space for displaying the class rules; this is elaborated by students, under the guidance of the teachers, at the beginning of each school year, the children being able to update and improve it throughout, according to the needs of the whole group;
- a thematic center, where children can find materials specific to the daily or weekly theme;
- a space in which the activities from the schedule and the daily program, established by the students together with the teachers, are displayed;
- a large space, intended for the Morning Meeting; here we find the author's chair and the calendar of nature, a panel with a supporting role for discussions on the passage of time, the state of the weather or events of interest for the whole class.
Each day of the Step by Step system starts with the morning meeting. The teacher invites the children to gather in the group, around her, to discuss together "Agenda of the Day" or the activities in the program, "Calendar of the Day", with reference to important events that took place that day and "Message of the day", designed of teachers to introduce new notions related to the theme of the day.
The message of the day is written on a flip-chart, centrally positioned. Children are invited to write their names on this flip-chart, if they wish to sit on the Author's Chair and communicate to their colleagues and teachers the news they have or their personal experiences.
The morning meeting is thus a warming moment, in which the focus is on communication. After heating, work on activity centers. These are specific to each school year. For example, at the level of the preparatory class and the first class, the centers operate Literacy, Math / Science, Art, Construction and Role Playing. Starting with the second class, the Literacy Center is transformed into a Reading Center. The Writing Center is also introduced.
The centers are represented by tables joined together, with several chairs around, to allow the children to work in groups. On the tables of each Center there are sheets with specific work tasks, designed by teachers, to give students the opportunity to practice their skills or combine new information with those already acquired. Tasks are progressive, which gives each child the opportunity to solve them at their own pace and at their own level.
When the time comes for the evaluation, each group and each child presents in front of the others how they have solved the tasks given by the teacher, at the respective center. Colleagues are invited to ask questions and come up with suggestions. The works carried out are then displayed on the panels located next to each Activity Center, several days in a row, in order to be consulted by all children. In this way, students have the opportunity to compare results and to get an idea of their own progress, in other words about the skills and dexterities obtained up to that moment. The papers that have been exposed are then kept in the activity map of each student.
The evaluation of the progress achieved by each student is permanent, without resorting to notes. Moreover, the child is stimulated to solve the tasks in the classroom, thus eliminating the need for homework, used in the traditional system to consolidate knowledge.
