What's the difference between acetaminophen and ibuprofen?

What's the difference between acetaminophen and ibuprofen?

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are both good medicines, and both provide the same basic relief from fever and pain, even though they have different chemical structures and side effects. Ibuprofen is recommended only for babies 6 months and older.

Ibuprofen works by limiting the body's production of fatty acids called prostaglandins. In addition to reducing fever, body aches, and pain caused by prostaglandins, ibuprofen reduces inflammation (swelling and redness).

It's slightly more powerful and longer lasting than acetaminophen. Because of this, it can be taken only every six to eight hours and no more than three times in a 24-hour period. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) doesn't recommend ibuprofen for babies under 6 months, because it's harder to tell how ill a child is if his temperature and irritability are "masked" for an extended period.

One drawback to ibuprofen, assuming your child is old enough to take it, is that if he isn't eating well and he takes it regularly, it can irritate his stomach. If he seems to have a sensitive tummy, you might want to give it to him with food or a feeding.

Like ibuprofen, acetaminophen reduces fever, body aches, and pain. Unlike ibuprofen, it doesn't reduce inflammation. Acetaminophen is milder on the digestive tract and causes no stomach problems, so you don't need to give it to your child with food.

In large doses, however, acetaminophen is very toxic to the liver. Doctors recommend giving your child the fewest number of doses needed to keep him comfortable – at most, every four to six hours, and no more than five times in a 24-hour period.

If your child is also taking another medicine, avoid a potentially fatal overdose by making sure that medicine doesn't also contain acetaminophen.

Getting the dose right
Parents sometimes accidentally overdose their children by using the wrong dispensing device. For example, infant drops should only be given with the dropper that comes with the product – using a spoon makes it too easy to give an overdose. And some forms of the medicine are stronger than others. Infant drops are stronger than "children's elixir," for example.

(Editors' note: Acetaminophen infant drops are being phased out and replaced by an infant liquid that's less concentrated. Find out how to tell the difference between old and new infant acetaminophen, and use our dosage chart to find the correct dose by weight.)

Whether you give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen, giving the correct dose (based on weight) at the correct intervals is crucial. This can be trickier than it sounds, so call the doctor if you're unsure. And do ask the doctor before giving it to your child if he's younger than 3 months. A baby that young needs to be checked for serious illness.

Alexander, our love!

Alexander, our love!

Mum alexandru31
Baby Alexander, born naturally, with epidural and episiotomy
It was September 18, 2006. The CM had delayed 2 weeks, but I had not given importance.
I had a month and a half since I got married and that's about as long as I knew what it means to make love ...
I told my mom that she was late and she was scared. I did the pregnancy test and it came out positive ... I was scared and I didn't want to, only my husband supported me and encouraged me! All of my people criticized me and made me not want to, but that's when you lean your ear on others ...

Alex was going to be born on my birthday!
I went to the doctor and he calculated my DPN: May 25, 2007. I couldn't believe it! May 25 - my birthday! It was like a gift, an encouragement! 9 months have passed since I was analyzing myself in the mirror how big my tummy is, how much it grew and especially when the baby started gymnastics.

I sat for hours on the tummy to see when he was moving, to feel it! What beautiful feelings!
And I arrived on May 30, when I was in control and was told that I had 2 cm dilation and that night I will have the baby! Everything was turning and I was shaking. I left the office and started crying. My husband was looking at me and he didn't know how to calm me down.
I went home and I had 2 contractions at 45 minutes and then the break ... I was quiet, I rested, I didn't stop too much, I looked at the bag next to the door, not to forget it.
The first contractions of labor
At 22.30 the first painful contraction, the next at 23. I waited for the next: at 23.30 and then at 00.00, and at 0.30 I was in the hospital. They admitted me, they took me to the room where I was to be born, the husband was with me. I had no emotions I knew they were in good hands.
At 2 o'clock my membranes broke and then at 3 o'clock they put my epidural. Everything was quiet, only my heart could hear it beating: tica-tac, tica-tac!
By the morning the contractions were becoming more and more painful and I was tightening my husband's hand. He wanted to be in my place, not to see me like that anymore.
The team of doctors came and told me the baby will be with us in the next few minutes. They made me push when I feel the contractions. When it was necessary to cut me they asked my husband to come out the hall and then they told me to push with all the power. And I pushed so hard that my husband heard me from the hall. It was over ... What am I doing? Why did they take him to the door?

The birth of Alexander
They called him, baby was half out. He came near me more scared. Another effort followed and the baby was with us. It was May 31, 9.30 o'clock. They told us it has 4,100 grams. What the??? And what a little tummy I was seeing.
It was expensive! So clean and didn't cry at all! Received note 10! He had my little table near my bed and I can never forget how Emi - Dad went and stretched a finger on the baby, and he put his little feet in Dad's chest.
Meeting with our love!
They gave it to my chest and I was surprised: it was exactly how I wanted it, with the bumps, the nose and the holes in the cheeks just like my dad. And it smelled like the potters had just come out. I put it to his breast and he started to pop. It was something indescribable! Meeting with our love! And the only pain I remember is the one after ... from the episiotomy ...
And grandparents are the proudest and I love him the most. We have a year since we are in different countries and send them pictures and videos daily with their "binoculars". Hello, that is my father, he always says "my heir" and this makes me happier on the day that Alexander is with us, although he came 6 days later with the probable date: neither on my birthday nor on the 29th, Abu's day (as Alex tells his grandfather).
Alexander is the most expensive child, loving and understanding. We are proud and happy!

"At the beginning of the collaboration for Mickey's Magic Show the director, Jerry Bilik, said to me: 'I would like to go into the theater and feel that something magical is about to happen to me.' This idea is very obvious. It can be about nothing but Disney magic, "Youmans said.

Nominated for The Drama Desk Award, James Youmans has always been fascinated by working with the animated world. "I chose the most original ways to use modern technique to render the viewers a dream world, the Disney magic world. For me, Disney magic is a surprising, mysterious world, as never seen before - a world where everything it is possible, "said Youmans excitedly.

When creating all the props for the Disney Live production! - Mickey's Magic Show, six magicians, participated in the undercover wand of Youmans. The smallest piece of props is the enchanted apple from Alba as Snow, and the largest, the colorful cannon used in spectacular magic numbers.

The decorations were made in over 680 hours by over 30 craftsmen. Some props were handmade by entire teams of skilled people, this being the case of the iron work covering the Cinderella track. In creating the entire set design, over 2200 meters of aluminum and 1783 meters of textiles were used to create the curtains. Regarding the materials used to build the decoration, they were specially chosen for maximum practicability. All materials were painted in different styles for which over 45 different colors were used that will create a spectacular three-dimensional space.

When kid's nicknames turn into bullying or bullying

When kid's nicknames turn into bullying or bullying

Nicknames are those nicknames that are used to refer to others focusing on a particular characteristic. These appear without any offensive intention but, generally, they end up annoying those who receive them because they are usually based on labels that highlight physical or behavioral defects, becoming degrading.

When nicknames are used to refer to others aggressively, and it is done continuously, this type of behavior can be considered to be bullying. Therefore, parents and teachers must know when kid's nicknames turn into bullyingto be very attentive.

Many times this behavior is not due to any specific motivation of the harasser towards the harassed, but the truth is that it gives rise to negative and, sometimes, excessive consequences due to the 'snowball' effect that occurs if it is not intervened before. These are:

1. Low self-esteem
Nicknames generate an identity. Children begin to have a distorted and damaged image of themselves.

2. School failure
Children who are bullied lose interest in studies and avoid going to school.

3. They acquire phobias
Fear of everything: sleeping alone, leaving the house, etc.

4. Depression
Children begin to feel bad and not trust anyone.

5. Passive attitude
They don't care about anything or anyone.

6. Constant changes in your mood
Nightmares, night terrors, etc.

Studies show that large numbers of children are constantly bullied or bullied, but most cases still go unnoticed.

Bullying scenarios are often omitted when nicknames are used. And it is that, generally it does not differ when nicknames are used to joke and when they are used to humiliate the other. When pranks are made, it is being used as a social sharing tool. It is a way in which the little ones They learn to cope with and know how to handle constructive criticism.

When jokes are affective, they will help to face criticism in a positive way, in addition to creating bonds. Jokes are also used to influence the other. In this way the behavior of the group to which the children belong is modeled. This kind of guas They are harmless and their only purpose is communication.

The problem comes when joking is confused with verbal harassment. In this case, it will no longer be a way to network or create a group of friends. It will be the opposite. The goal will be to hurt the 'victim' and make the stalker feel more powerful.

It all starts with a negative joke. If the joke annoys the 'victim', the one who makes it, that is, the 'joker' usually stops. But, if the joke persists, it is repeated over time and the intention is to intimidate, the joke will immediately be considered harassment.

It is important that there is a positive environment having to do with the communication of emotions. In other words, active listening and empathy are encouraged in order to establish a solid base to face conflicts that may arise.

For this, both children and adults in their environment should carry out some recommendations.

Children should:

- Show respect towards others, and demand the same in return.

- Mark limits with their peers.

- Learn to manage your emotions so that there is a good coexistence with others.

- Work self-esteem. Knowing that you are neither better nor worse than the rest.

The adults in your environment should:

- Be an example, do not address children with labels and nicknames that they do not like.

- Help self-esteem work. Most of the time the nicknames are in reference to physical defects of the other. If this occurs, adults must make the child understand that he and his personality are much more than a physical description.

- Help the child to be assertive. That is, to defend their rights without imposing anything on others.

Skull flattened, will it pass?

Skull flattened, will it pass?

Do you think your baby's skull is a bit flat and only on one side? Some precautions can overcome it quickly. Above all, do not believe that it will pass over time! You have to deal with it now.

The problem

The skull of your infant is flattened on one side, left or right, and often in the back. His ears are detached, the one on the flattened side is positioned ahead of the other. It is the asymmetrical aspect of the head that is important. Indeed, a baby can have a problem without a head a little flattened, but on a regular basis.

Who disturbs it?

  • You. That worries you, rightly so. However, a malformation ("positional or postural plagiocephaly") that is managed in the first months of life is likely to improve.
  • Your child. Having an irregular head can be embarrassing for him when he is older. Know that this deformation, very visible when the baby is very small, will be attenuated later by the mass of the hair.

He has a flattened skull on one side because he had a bad position in utero

The proportion of infants with flattened skull is 2%. It climbs to 9% in twins! Toddlers with deformity of the skull often also have a congenital torticollis, related to their in utero position. Because of this torticollis, the baby still supports the same side and his skull flattens further.

  • What has to be done. A physiotherapist will loosen the torticollis by manipulations. Your baby, relaxed, can then turn his head to the other side.

He has the skull flattened on one side because he had to be revived

Infants who have undergone long-term resuscitation more often have flattened skulls. It is linked, here too, to a prolonged extended position.

  • What has to be done. Place the bed so that light comes from the opposite side of the deformation. Your baby will turn his head around himself. Arrange comforters and mobile in the same direction. You will see results after three months. In one year, the deformation should be corrected.

He has a bad sleeping position

  • Like all savvy moms, you put your baby on your back. However, this repeated daily posture can cause a slight flattening of the skull. Without questioning this sleeping mode, of course, simple tips can prevent this deformity: alternate the position of the head, turn it to one side then the other, to prevent your baby from developing a side preferential. Then, as soon as your child opens the eye, propose him the position on the belly: it releases the support on the posterior part of the head and allows the acquisition of a better tone of the body.
  • If the deformity is very pronounced the doctors advise to put the baby on the opposite side to the flattened side, with the help of a wedge-baby. Other instructions: orient the bed in such a way that the light arrives on the side opposite to the deformation, dispose of its familiar toys according to the same principle. This will help your baby turn his head by himself!
  • What has to be done. Up to 18 months-2 years, the skull of the infant is soft. It is therefore possible to intervene to remodel it ... smoothly. It's about lifting the upper body of your baby who, while staying on the back, will turn a little on the right side. For this, hold a small bag of rice (at the relaxation radius of the wellness shops) under his back.
  • As soon as he is awake, place him on his stomach too : play with him, stimulate him ... his head will be more toned.

Mom's words

"At the maternity ward, the midwife pointed out to us that Aubin had the skull deformed on one side only. Seeing that it did not work out, the pediatrician advised us to continue to sleep on his back, but a little on the opposite side, using a baby chock. But that did not change anything! So, we went to see Dr. Renier who reassured us: there was nothing neurological! We followed his advice, like putting Aubin on his stomach as soon as he was awake. Today, he is 14 months old and all is well. He still has his skull a bit flattened, but nothing bad! "

Emilie, mother of Aubin, 14 months.
