Why You Should Stop Telling Your Child 'Be Good'

It is very common to hear moms and dads expressions such as the following: "behave well", "if you don't behave well, we leave the park", "how many times do I have to tell you to behave well" or even "if you behave well you I will buy a gift ”.

But ... are we doing the right thing? We explain why you should stop saying to your child 'be good' constantly.

In my case, in many contexts in which I move: park, school, shopping center, children's shows, theme park ..., I hear it very often ..., and I wonder Does the little one really understand what his mother is asking of him with that "be good"? I hear it so much that I really come to think that they do not know what is required of them, that they do not know what they should do at that moment ..., since that request, that order, is already being used so often that it no longer makes sense. , if at any time it did.

Well… Where do we put the boundary between a child who behaves well or misbehaves? Is a child really bad? Or that behavior or attitude can be the result of hunger, fatigue, boredom, need for attention? ...

Let us reflect on whether the meaning that the adult gives is the same as that given by the boy or the girl ..., that "behave yourself" ..., it means the same for the doctor's waiting room, that for when we do the shopping together or when I say goodbye of my son at the school door ..., but really, what do I mean by that "behave yourself"? ... maybe to be still, even if he is 5 years old and it is frankly complicated, or I mean that he does not let go of my hand while we go shopping ... or I mean that he does not bother me.

The best thing is to say what we really need from them and they in different contexts. What is necessary is to explain to them where we are going, why we are going and how it is required to be in that place or with those people.

It is important to decode our usual phrase "behave yourself" and explain in a simple and clear way what we expect behavior to be. For example, using a loving tone and with positivity, we can do it like this:

- 'Now we are going to go shopping at the market, I need you to be aware of me as I will be of you, that you be by my side at all times. We are going to buy fruit and some meat. So you can help me. Then we'll find a while and a space for you to play and run, if you want. '

- 'Then I need you to accompany me to the doctor, today I am not feeling well. There it is necessary that we keep the volume low and that you are as calm as possible. I'll bring you some notebooks to paint if you want. Then at home, you can play for a little while. '

- 'Enjoy your day at school very much today! Be attentive to everything the teacher says and asks, in order to learn a lot. Play as much as you can, when you touch and have fun with all your friends. '

If we make them accomplices of these situations, and we explain them to them, We are also making them participate, valuing their active accompaniment, increasing their self-esteem, enhancing that secure bond, explaining what we expect of them ..., and a host of positive aspects that are added if we eliminate that "behave yourself".

They bullied the children in the nursery

They bullied the children in the nursery A real scandal. That's how you can comment on what the media thundered today. Babysitters in a private nursery in Wroclaw abused children. The wife of the nursery owner and one of the caretakers of the facility at ul. Lipowa was accused of psychological and physical abuse of children. For many weeks the babysitters remained silent. Fearful of losing their jobs, they didn't alert when they noticed what methods the facility owner was using. Unfortunately they were outrageous. Children in the nursery were forced to eat: they were tied to chairs in rompers and jackets, they were put on beds without mattresses, on the very rungs.

Parents report that they were not allowed into the facility, and the children were picked up at the exit. The caretaker reported that she refused to use the methods practiced in the nursery. The case goes to the police. Guardians and owners of the facility face up to 5 years in prison.

Zika virus, which has become so popular lately due to numerous cases of widespread infections, is part of the Flaviviridae family and was first discovered in the 1940s, in the forest whose name it bears, in Uganda.

infections they are transmitted by the stinging of the mosquitoes of the Aedes species and are manifested by symptoms such as conjunctivitis, rashes and fever.

According to the World Health Organization, there is still no vaccine to combat this dangerous virus, which is especially feared by pregnant women, because of the effects the infection may have on the fetus.

Fetal or neonatal microcephaly is the thing that most future mothers are afraid of, given the current spread of the virus. WHO experts also mention that the only sure way to prevent infections is to protect against mosquito bites.

Here are the things you need to know about this virus, the more you have proposed to become pregnant or you are already!

Symptoms of Zika virus infestation and diagnosis

Although the incubation period of the virus has not been established exactly by doctors who are specialized in infectious diseases, they estimate that this is only a few days after the infestation.

The first symptoms that are manifested are fever, skin rashes, muscle and joint spasms, conjunctivitis, headaches and weakness.

These usually last between two and 7 days and most often have no malignant follow-up, but there have been cases in which people infected with Zika have had autoimmune and neurological complications.

Regarding the infestation of pregnant women, a coherent link between the presence of the virus and fetal microcephaly has not yet been established, but research to date suggests that such a connection may exist.

Studies continue, however, especially in countries where several cases of microcephaly have been reported, such as Brazil, with the mention that doctors are inspecting other possible factors that could lead to the development of such a disease.

The method of diagnosing the infection with the Zika virus is amplification by polymerase chain reaction, respectively by collecting blood samples. At serological diagnosis the results may be questionable, because cross-reactions of Zika virus with others in the same family are possible.

Virus transmission, treatment and prevention of infestation

Mosquitoes of the Aedes species, specifically those of the female type, are those who transmit the Zika virus through stings. They live in tropical areas and can transmit other viruses from the same family, such as yellow fever.

The first cases of infectious epidemics caused by this virus were registered in 2007 and 2014 in the Yap and French Polynesia islands, and in 2015 Brazil, Africa and Colombia also reported numerous infections caused by Zika. Its migration has now reached over 13 countries in the two Americas.

Since the infections registered so far have been benign, there is still no treatment for them. Rest, hydration and administration of anti-fever drugs, as well as painkillers, are very important if the infection manifests through pain. More serious symptoms require specialized intervention, as appropriate.

As for the prevention of infections with the Zika virus, it is recommended first of all to remove the mosquitoes by physical methods (solutions that destroy the larvae, insecticides) and prevent their contacts by using skin products that keep them away, by wearing light clothes and which to cover a larger area of the body, by using nets against insects and by blocking access by closing doors and windows.

Given that mosquitoes breed near water sources, it would be ideal for them to remain covered.

What are the risks of pregnant women and girls?

Apart from the manifestation of the classic symptoms in the case of the mother, there is evidence that the fetus may also suffer from the infestation, through the transplacental transmission, which has not been officially confirmed.

According to research so far, this could occur even during labor, depending on the phase where the virus is in the mother's body.

The data so far indicate a link between Zika virus and fetal or neonatal microcephaly, which is manifested by the visible reduction of the size of the fetus head compared to the cranial perimeter. This could lead to insufficient brain development.

The Zika virus can also be transmitted sexually

Although doctors initially referred to the mosquito bite infestation, one of the most recent cases in the United States appears to have been sexually contacted. This is about a Texas patient who had sex with a person who had the virus in a viremic condition and was later diagnosed with Zika.

If you are pregnant or preparing to become pregnant and your partner has recently visited one of the countries where Zika infections have been reported, it is advisable to protect yourself with a condom for a month, in order to avoid transmission of the virus, even if this can be translated by postponing the moment you will become pregnant.

Where not to spend your vacation if you are pregnant, to avoid contacting the Zika virus

Although the present evidence is not sufficient to officially establish a link between the Zika virus and the insufficient development of the girls' brains, health organizations recommend pregnant women to be cautious in this regard and to avoid travel to areas where infections have been reported. virus.

So far, the existence of the Zika virus has been reported in 35 countries that you should avoid in the following period, if you are pregnant: Virgin Islands Americant, American Samoa, Tonga, Barbados, Venezuela, Bolivia, Thailand, Brazil, Islands Solomon, Republic of Cape Verde, Samoa, Colombia, Saint Martin Island, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Curacao, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador, New Caledonia, Fiki, Mexico, French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Maldives, Guatemala, Jamaica, Guyana, Honduras and Haiti.

The MAE recommendations for visiting countries where Zika infections have been registered

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning regarding the visit of the 35 countries where infections have been reported, which should be especially taken into account by pregnant women, given that they may be exposed to more risks through pregnancy. .

In this warning, MAE talks about the importance of using protection methods against mosquito bites by using insecticides.

Very important is the statement of the release regarding the use of DEET (N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) which, although not desirable for children younger than 3 months, can be used without causing side effects in pregnant women.

Also in the MFA release there is a recommendation for people suffering from autoimmune diseases, respectively of chronic diseases, which suggests to them to seek clarification from a doctor who specializes in infectious diseases before venturing on such a journey; it will be able to make the best personalized recommendations regarding the use of the methods of protection against insects, but also of the recommended medicines for the treatment of fever, pain and other symptoms manifested by patients infected with Zika.

Pregnant women should, according to the warning, MAE, declare if they have traveled to the areas mentioned in the prenatal consultation, so that the doctor supervising their pregnancy can closely monitor their evolution, taking into account the eventuality of the infection.

Water seepage or maybe mucus?

Pregnancy changes every woman. Not only physically but also emotionally. In this particular period, we become more sensitive to the signals sent by our bodies. We observe them and based on them we anticipate the course of the next days. The symptoms of the upcoming delivery become very important, one of them is the filtration of fetal waters. How do you know that they are amniotic fluid and not discharge or urine?

When does the filtration of fetal water occur?

Water seepage may be a sign that labor is starting. Unfortunately, it may also indicate intrauterine infection.

In practice, it is difficult to recognize. Due to the changed conditions, it can be perceived as a natural secretion from the vagina and even urine (due to strong pressure of the uterus on the bladder).

How to recognize fetal waters?

Fetal waters are usually colorless or light (yellowish). Consistency resemble water. Most often they are odorless or have a sweet smell.

Sometimes fetal waters are pinkdue to blood staining them. If the amniotic fluid is very red, you should go to the hospital immediately.

In some situations amniotic fluid may be green, brownish green, or may stink. When this happens, seek medical attention immediately. It is not always true that green fetal waters have negative consequences, but in many cases they point to perinatal hypoxia.

Read what the waters look like.

Sudden leakage or oozing of amniotic fluid?

Leakage of fetal waters is not spectacular in every situation. It happens that instead of a significant amount of amniotic fluid escaping at one time, we are dealing with seepage of the amniotic fluid. In the latter situation, the water flows out slowly, which can be a huge challenge if you try to assess the situation.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, only 1 in 10 women experience a sudden large leakage of amniotic fluid. In the remaining women, the process begins with a delicate trickle, from the filtration of amniotic fluid.

Amniotic fluid or vaginal discharge or urine?

The slow flow of fetal waters can be difficult to assess. Sometimes, the waters are confused with urine (this one, however, has a characteristic smell and a slightly different color), as well as with vaginal discharge.

How to distinguish amniotic fluid and vaginal discharge?

Mucus is denser, pulling, with white fragments, the amniotic fluid resembles water.

Another indicator that may help in assessing the situation is the slowdown of the outflow of fetal waters when standing.

If it's a leakage of amniotic fluid ...

Regardless of whether seepage of the amniotic fluid has occurred or whether vaginal discharge is a problem, you should consult a doctor with the slightest doubt. The specialist will assess the situation and give you any necessary help in the event of a problem.

It is particularly dangerous to pool the waters before the 36th week of pregnancy, when the baby is not yet ready to be born. Requires treatment and monitoring of the situation in a hospital setting.

The trend makes sense when you consider that more women today are graduating from college, and it's predicted that women in the next generation will earn more than men. In fact, that's already happening in the United States for young, single women.

Parents are also moving away from long, compound names and names with double consonants – Montserrat, Michelle, María Camila, Fiorella, Melissa, and Alessandra are some of the longer names that have fallen off the list. They're showing a preference for short, simple names, with Alba, Lola, Eva, and Maia, among others, appearing in the top 100 for the first time.
