The tonsils are organs of lymphoid tissue, whose function is to protect the entry of the airways from the invasion of bacteria. A few years ago it was very common for children to have their angina removed (tonsillectomy in medical language). In some cases they were removed because the child was not gaining weight as 'in theory' he should have.

In recent years, otolaryngologists have agreed with pediatricians, that tonsillectomy it must be done in some more specific cases. The criteria are not strict, but it is true that tonsil removal surgery (tonsillectomy) is not as common as it used to be.

Generally, the pediatrician or the ENT considers that the child would improve his general condition or his growth in a series of situations. For example, a child who has many recurrent tonsillitis, consisting of infectious processes with fever and sore throat or plaques on the tonsils. In these cases it is recommended keep a list of all infectious processes that the child has had, therefore the child's pediatrician, as well as his parents, must carry out an exhaustive control of the infections he suffers. When is it decided to operate ?:

1. Tonsillectomy would be beneficial in a child who has 7 or more episodes of tonsillitis in the past year or 5 or more episodes of tonsillitis per year in the last 2 years.

2. When tonsillitis gets complicated, the peritonsillar abscess appears. It can cause respiratory distress and a lot of damage to the general state, as well as a very severe sore throat, high fever, drooling and difficulty speaking and swallowing. It requires intravenous antibiotic treatment for its cure. If the child has had two consecutive episodes of peritonsillar abscess, it is also considered an indication for surgery.

3. Another process that, if repeated several times, may be an indication for tonsillectomy is cervical adenitis. It consists of a swollen glands in the cervical region, with fever and general malaise, which is usually treated with intravenous antibiotics.

4. Sleep apnea in children: Tonsillar hypertrophy or enlargement of the tonsils it is the main cause of this disorder, which determines the presence of apneas, that is, of respiratory pauses in number greater than one per hour. A nocturnal polysomnography should be performed for diagnosis, which measures the child's oxygen saturation throughout the night, and the existence of respiratory pauses. The treatment of this pathology also requires tonsillectomy, and on some occasions it is also performed extirpation of vegetations (adenoidectomy).

- Frequently recurring episodes of tonsillitis prevent the normal development of normal activities of the childSince he is unable to attend school, he cannot concentrate on homework, which makes it difficult or may delay his learning curve.

- It can also affect the working life of parents, since in many cases they cannot go to work because they must stay at home to care for the child.

- These frequent infectious processes can also alter the growth curve of the child, first affecting weight gain, and if they persist they can also affect height gain. Sometimes the otolaryngologist or pediatrician will propose an observation period of about 6 months to the parents to be able to assess the frequency of tonsillitis processes, as well as the affectation of the stature weight curve.

Your 3-month-old's development: Week 3

Nodding off

At last, your baby's sleep patterns may start to settle down, giving you some rest. Many 4-month-olds sleep for a six-hour stretch through the night, though others still wake for an occasional feeding. Some babies take until age 6 months or later to sleep through the night, though, so don't get your hopes up! Two daytime naps are usual now.

Beginning to interact with others

Your baby's starting to draw conclusions about the world around him. He's looking at everything with curiosity, even his own reflection.

Prop an unbreakable mirror next to him or sit him in front of your mirror when you're getting ready. Your baby won't realize that it's actually his image in the mirror (this usually begins to happen well into the second year), but that doesn't matter. He'll love to stare at his – or anyone else's – reflection, and he may show his delight by an all-out gum grin.

Your baby may stop sucking his thumb or bottle to listen to your voice. By cooing or making noises at him, and by describing even the most mundane household chore, you're not only connecting with him but also encouraging him to express himself. Wait and see if he "answers."

Your baby is becoming more animated and engaging (even with others) – flashing smiles, oohing, and cooing. And the fun has really begun as he's starting to laugh.

When you're with friends, keep your baby nearby so he can hear the richness of human interaction. He'll enjoy watching the antics of other babies, toddlers, and pets, but keep up your guard: Neither he nor they know the rules of safe engagement just yet.

Grab and go

Anything within your baby's reach is fair game now. While he's mastering his grabbing skills, give your baby interesting things to hold: lightweight rattles that are easy to grasp, a plastic or rubber ring to hold with both hands, squeaking toys, or soft stuffed animals.

Your baby will start to favor one hand for a while and then switch to the other, but you can't really tell whether he's a lefty or a righty until he's about 2 or 3 years old.

Remember, your baby is an individual

All babies are unique and meet milestones at their own pace. Developmental guidelines simply show what your baby has the potential to accomplish – if not right now, then soon. If your baby was premature, keep in mind that kids born early usually need a bit more time to meet their milestones. If you have any questions at all about your baby's development, ask your healthcare provider.

What do you know about antibiotics?

What do you know about antibiotics?

Rhino, angina, viral or bacterial infection ... antibiotics are not systematic, but when to use them? Take our quiz to test your knowledge.

Question (1/15)

Antibiotics are effective against viral infections

That's rightIt's wrong

With respect to viruses (most respiratory infections in children are viral) antibiotics are ineffective. In a few days, thanks to the mobilization of its natural defenses, the child gets rid of his infection. In contrast, antibiotics are active against the development of bacteria (pneumococci, streptococci, E. coli, staphylococci) that are responsible for some of the infectious diseases such as ear infections, urinary tract infections, meningitis. Remember that the best way to prevent a disease remains vaccination when it exists.
